The Orlando Children's Home

The Orlando Children's Home is an orphanage located in Soweto, South Africa which gives abandoned and orphaned children, from newborn babies to teenagers, the best chance to develop and make a difference in the world. Founded in 1940, the Orlando Children's Home cares for children abandoned for a variety of reasons: some because they are physically or mentally handicapped; others because of their HIV status and because their parents have died and their relatives cannot take care of them. The letter following this page was written by the Director, Mirriam Mazibuko, of the Orlando Children's Home.

Where is Soweto?

Soweto is Southwest of Johannesburg and was originally set aside by the South African white government for residence by Blacks. The townships constituting Soweto grew out of shantytowns that arose with the arrival of Black laborers from rural areas, especially between the World Wars. There is little industrial development; most of Soweto's residents commute to Johannesburg for employment. It is the country's largest Black urban complex, and its residents were active in the protests that helped bring an end to apartheid by 1991.
